The New Mayor Pledges a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in Maiden Speech
On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his tenure.
A Historic Mayor
The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.
Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”
Steering by Socialist Convictions
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.
The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
A Costly Platform
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Headwinds
The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.
The Basic Tests of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
