Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the flight, including elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of outer space.
The group of women also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
