Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
